Will and the team smash the Ride London-Surrey 100
Will and his trusty team hit Surrey and London in style with a grueling 100 miler, finishing up with a triumphant ride down the Mall.
Event report:
Name: Will Readhead
Other team members?: David Mitchell, Nick Wood, Matt Preston, Jonathan Steele
What was the event?: Ride London-Surrey 100
When and where was it?
The ride took place on Sunday 2nd August, starting at the Olympic Park in east London, and finishing, 100 miles later, on The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace.
What did you specifically have to do?
A 100 mile closed-road bike ride, starting and finishing in central London, and taking in the best of the Surrey hills – Newlands Corner, Leith Hill and Box Hill.
How did you get on?
I really enjoyed the ride, finishing in under 6 hours, which included a welcome stop for coffee and cake atop Box Hill!
How did your training at Field of Fitness help you prepare for this event?
On top of getting out on the bike as much as possible, sessions on the Wattbike were invaluable in making sure my pedaling was as efficient as possible.
What was the best part about the whole experience?
The fast, flat run back into London, finishing along The Mall.
What was the worst?
Having set off way too fast, my legs were empty for the climb up through the village of Abinger Hammer. Watching people fly past me was more than a little demoralising; but I got my second wind in time for Leith Hill!
What did you, personally, get out of doing the event?
Having done the event a year earlier, when the course was curtailed due to the weather, it was very satisfying to be able to say I’ve completed the full course – and of course its great to be able to do something for a local charity in the process.
What next?
I have quite an extensive ‘bucket list’ still to work through, but it looks like the challenge for 2016 will be an attempt at qualification for the GBR triathlon age-group team.
Did you raise money for charity?
Yes indeed, for Shooting Star Chase.
